Common Misconceptions about SEO and Search Engines

SEO is a process that is sometimes misunderstood. There are various difficulties that crop up when dealing with the Search Engines and the algorithms. The Search Engines(like Google, Yahoo, and MSN) do not publish what aspects of the page they weigh in returning sites for specific phrases. That means that the SEO has to look at a variety of other methods to inform a site's performance. This leads to confusion, no lie. Here are three misunderstandings about Search Engines and SEO:

  1. My Site is live, why isn't it found in the Search Engine Results?
Your site is capable of being found, but it depends on how often the search engines send their "robots"(programs that follow the links on the internet) out to gather new data. As such, it is impossible to tell exactly when the site will appear in the search results. The best way to help your site appear is to make sure there are other sites linking to it...which leads to the next misconception.
  2. The more links the better, right?
Not entirely true. The links have to come from reliable sites, and are given more weight in the aforementioned algorithms if the reliable sites actually have something to do with the content on your own site. An example: a site about Pet Food will not help out very much should your site be concerned with the battles of Jason and The Argonauts. Now, don't get me wrong, links are important, but more does not always equal better.
  3. More pages equals more Search Engine Exposure
Again, this depends. Largely on what is on the pages, not the number. More pages are good, if there is unique and meaningful content on them. A 500 page site that repeats a paragraph over and over will not do as well as a 10 page site that has lots of content specifically about the site's focus and written for a human audience interested in the site.

There are more than these misconceptions about SEO around, and that's a fact. Broad key phrases, search terms that don't reflect the content, improper meta tags, the list goes on and on. Perhaps the most important thing that should be known about SEO and getting ranked is this: Content is King. Keeping that in mind will help get your website ranked better than any other trick, or any hat SEO you can think of. And the key to content is this: getting ranked on search engines will do nothing for your business if that content is not already geared towards a human audience. No amount of ranking will help your business' site if that site isn't for human readers or customers. Search engines don't support businesses, people do.

Keep these things in mind, and with TJ Design Studio's SEO work, your site will meet its goals in no time.
